About Lake Albanel–Mistassini–Bersimis Biodiversity Reserve

The Lake Albanel–Mistassini–Bersimis Biodiversity Reserve is a vast protected area spanning over 4,000 square kilometers in Quebec’s Côte-Nord region. It encompasses some of the largest freshwater lakes in the province—Lake Albanel and Lake Mistassini—along with the headwaters of the Bersimis River. The reserve's landscape is marked by boreal forests, rugged rocky outcrops, abundant wetlands, and pristine waterways. This rich variety of habitats supports an important array of wildlife, including moose, black bears, wolves, beavers, and numerous migratory birds. The reserve protects critical spawning grounds for fish such as brook trout and lake trout, making it a key conservation zone for aquatic biodiversity. Established in 2005, the reserve is managed primarily to conserve its ecological integrity, with limited development and controlled recreational use. Visitors can engage in backcountry canoe trips on the interlinked lakes and rivers, hiking through dense forests, birdwatching, and fishing in some of Quebec’s clearest waters. The area holds cultural significance as it coincides with traditional territories of Indigenous peoples, particularly the Cree, who have a long history of living off and caring for these lands. Due to its remote location and minimal infrastructure, the reserve offers visitors a true wilderness experience. Access is generally by floatplane or extended overland travel. Overall, the Lake Albanel–Mistassini–Bersimis Biodiversity Reserve stands out for its vast freshwater ecosystems, intact natural habitats, and opportunities for immersive outdoor adventures away from urbanized areas.
